Understanding the Sri Lankan elephant
Behaviour · Family · Ecology
Building a stronger culture of elephant conservation through evidence, awareness, responsible reporting and coexistence.
Elephant Guardians Sri Lanka is an independent initiative being developed to connect people with reliable information, responsible reporting and a stronger culture of elephant conservation.
Promote conservation information grounded in credible sources.
Help people understand elephants, habitat and conservation.
Encourage responsible approaches that recognise people and wildlife.
The Sri Lankan elephant is a recognised subspecies of the Asian elephant and an important part of the island's natural heritage.
These figures describe the 2024 island-wide elephant population survey. They are not organisational achievements.
Recorded during the 2024 island-wide survey.
17.6% of elephants recorded in the survey.
The survey structure covered nine elephant ranges.
Five elephant reserves were included within the survey structure.
Elephant conservation is inseparable from landscape. Forests, grasslands, water, agricultural areas and human settlements can all form part of the wider landscape through which elephants move.
Future public mapping will provide useful conservation information while protecting sensitive wildlife locations.
Human–elephant coexistence is a complex conservation challenge. Responsible conservation needs to recognise community safety, livelihoods and experiences alongside the ecological needs of elephants.
Understand the realities of communities sharing elephant landscapes.
Understand forests, water, movement and connectivity.
Promote responsible behaviour around elephants and discourage dangerous interventions.
Encourage collaboration between communities, experts and conservation organisations.
The planned reporting system will provide a structured way for people to document elephant-related concerns.
A future knowledge centre for species information, conservation research, community perspectives and responsible wildlife education.

The Guardian Network is designed to eventually connect people who want to contribute their knowledge, time and skills to responsible conservation.
Share accurate conservation information.
Support responsible observation and documentation.
Help develop better digital conservation tools.
Support future community-focused activities.
The next phase of Elephant Guardians can connect public observations with a structured conservation workflow — without exposing sensitive wildlife information.
Case IDs, report categories, review stages, verification notes and follow-up records.
Evidence handling can be designed around access control, validation and secure storage.
Public maps can show useful landscape information while withholding sensitive elephant locations.
Future administrators can review cases, guardians, enquiries, projects and evidence from one controlled workspace.
Donations can eventually support conservation education, digital reporting infrastructure, community awareness and approved conservation activities.
Donation processing will only be activated once the initiative has established the appropriate organisational and payment arrangements.
Secure payment gateway will be connected after the donation system is formally activated.
Whether you are interested in conservation, volunteering, partnerships, research or responsible wildlife information, we would like to hear from you.
Elephant Guardians is a new initiative. We will not publish fabricated rescue numbers, fictional projects or invented impact statistics. Facts will be attributed to their sources and future activities will be documented honestly.
Facts attributed to their sources.
Future activities recorded honestly.
No invented impact.
A new independent conservation initiative for Sri Lanka's elephants.
The donation interface has been designed and is ready for a payment gateway integration. Donations will only be accepted after the appropriate organisational and financial arrangements are established.
No donation will be charged through this prototype.
